Although we're far from the Alyx' graphics, this shows - I believe - the amazing power of the Source-engine - just using a simple GTX 680. Compared to playing in 1920x1080 in 60 Hz, 2048x1536 in 85 Hz is more than twice as demanding (pushing 115 % more pixels per second due to both increased res and Hz). I also have a 27" lcd attached to that rig, but I still prefer crt for pancake gaming (even though it's only 21" it's placed 1 foot from my face, so it's not that small on my retina, lol).Įven playing in 2048x1536 I got perfect 85 fps - and that's even when adding 4xMSAA (and otherwise maxed out settings). I'm using my old non-VR gaming rig - which has a Intel Q6600 quad-core, 8GB ram and a GTX 680 - and my trusty Sony Trinitron F520 CRT-monitor (yup - true blacks like oled, res 2048x1536 in 85 Hz, I think this monitor was the king of crts back then). From a performance-perspective Half-Life Episode 1 is really amazing. You get a feeling where Alyx' textures and design come from. On a side note - it is fun to experience the Source-engine in Half-Life Episodes 1 and 2. I'd say that about Stormland, Asgard's Wrath and Lone Echo too, if someone compares them to even the finest and most delicious pancakes o:) In short, my point is that I think Alyx is so far ahead of any pancake game - and especially very old games from 19 - that I wouldn't consider it fair to compare them. I actually tried to play HL2 Episode One before Alyx arrived, but quit after a few minutes - I'm having a real hard time enjoying pancake gaming these days. I do think Doom Eternal looks quite cool though, but I'll probably reduce the score by 50 % alone due to non-VR and the associated lack of immersion - and I'm not trying to be funny or to provoke. I did write 20 % for Half-Life 2 But have you tried Half-Life 2 lately? I totally agree it was the best computer game ever in 2004, but if it launched today with the exact same graphics I don't think I would play it. I think non VR versions of HL were much better in everythingįun thing - if I rate Alyx 98% - and looking at the games as if they were released today, I'd probably rate pancake Half-Life 5% (even in 1998 I thought the graphics were semi-poor) and Half-Life 2 maybe 20%.ĥ and 10? Come on now.
